Singapore has three dedicated animal parks each of which is responsible for the protection & grooming of wildlife and endangered species.
These parks are all owned & operated by Wildlife Reserves Singapore, a Singapore registered charity who's key directive is the protection of endangered species.
Each park serves as a world-class leisure attraction, providing excellent exhibits of animals (and birds) presented in their natural environment, for the purpose of conservation, education and recreation.
The three award-winning parks are:
This most well known of the Singapore animal parks opened in 1973 on a 28 hectares (68 acres) are of land located on the margins of Upper Seletar Reservoir within Singapore's heavily forested central catchment area.
The zoo was designed to follow the modern trend of displaying animals in their most naturalistic environment, that is to say in open areas that contain hidden barriers & moats.
The Singapore Zoo is home to over 300+ species of animals & birds of which around 20% are in the "threatened with extinction" bracket, it also contains the largest "captive" colony of Orangutans anywhere in the world!. This most beautiful of all tropical animal parks attracts over 1.6 million visitors a year, and is a must for all Singapore visitors.
The Singapore Night Safari was opened in 1994 and occupies a total area of some 40 hectares (97 acres). The night safari is located within a secondary rainforest, directly adjacent to the Singapore Zoo and Upper Seletar Reservoir.
The Night Safari is currently home for some 1,000+ animals of 120 different species, of which approximately 30% are threatened species. The Singapore Night Safari is visited by just over 1.1 million visitors a year, making it one of the top visitor attractions & animal parks!.
Jurong Bird Park was opened in 1971, making it the oldest of the three main parks, but underwent a major S$10 million (US$7 million) overhaul just a few years ago.
The park which is fully landscaped is located on the western slope of Jurong Hill, & can be found within the Boon Lay Planning Area of the Jurong district and has a total land area of some 20 hectares (49 acres).
The Jurong Bird Park is an award winning world-famous bird zoo wherein there are specimens of magnificent bird life from around the world, including a flock of over one thousand flamingos.
It is currently the world's largest bird park in terms of number of birds and second largest in terms of land area. There are over 8,000 birds of 600 species in the Jurong Bird Park, of this total 29 species are on the endangered list. The bird park was visited by some 900,000 visitors in 2009, making it another top visitor attraction.
To encourage visitors to visit all three of the parks, there is a Park Hoppers Special pass that comprise of admission for all the parks in a day. Adult ticket is priced at $45 and Child ticket (3-12 years old) is priced at $16, prices as at March 2010.
