Boat Quay was the busiest part of the old Port of Singapore. This is because the quay handled well over 50% of all the marine cargo business during the 1860's. It is located on the south bank of the river.
The quay, who's shape resembles that of the under-belly of a Carp Fish, which according to Chinese belief is where "wealth and prosperity lay", saw rapid expansion with many shophouses being built, and the whole area becoming crowded.
Today, the once busy cargo loading bays have been transformed into a tourist attraction. Shophouses that were once offices and warehouses for shipping businesses have given way to fanciful pubs, bars and restaurants.
Though serving aquatic trade is no longer its primary role, the shophouses on it have been carefully conserved and now house a variety of bars, pubs and restaurants.
Therefore Boat Quay's social-economic role in the city has shifted away from that of trade and maritime commerce, and now leans towards more of a role accommodated for tourism and aesthetics for the commercial zone of which encloses the Singapore River.
It is the soft front to the cosmopolitan banking and financial sectors lying immediately behind it.Boat Quay is also the name of the road along the quay, which has since been converted into a pedestrian mall.
Bumboats that once carried cargo now transport tourists on river cruises instead. Be sure to take one of these river cruises for views of the riverside set against the skyscrapers landscape.
Savour some of the best Singapore Food & fine cuisines in restaurants along the river. From Chinese to Thai food, American to Italian, burgers to steaks, you can be sure that you meal will be a sumptuous one. There are also many seafood restaurants available.
As the evening sun sets, the place comes to life as you’ll find many professionals and expatriates dining and clubbing along the jazz bars, English-themed pubs and restaurants throughout the night.
